BYD to Launch First Pakistan Assembled Electric Vehicle by Mid 2026

Chinese electric vehicle leader BYD announced plans to introduce its first locally assembled car in Pakistan by July or August 2026, targeting the country’s growing demand for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

As the world’s largest EV manufacturer, BYD is aggressively expanding in international markets amid intense price competition in China. The Pakistan facility will help meet rising demand in emerging economies while benefiting from government incentives.

The Karachi-based plant, a joint venture between BYD and Mega Motor Company (a Hub Power subsidiary), has been under construction since April, according to Danish Khaliq, BYD Pakistan’s Vice President of Sales and Strategy.

Initial production capacity is set at 25,000 vehicles per year on a double-shift basis, though Khaliq did not specify when full-scale production would begin. The facility will initially assemble imported parts while gradually increasing local production of non-electric components.

Initially focused on Pakistan’s domestic market, the plant may later export to right-hand-drive regional markets, depending on logistics and economic feasibility. “We don’t anticipate excess capacity, as local demand is expected to rise steadily,” Khaliq stated.

BYD began selling imported EVs in Pakistan in March, with sales surpassing internal targets by 30%, reaching several hundred units. Khaliq projects Pakistan’s EV and plug-in hybrid market to grow three to four times in 2025 compared to 2024’s estimated 1,000 units. BYD aims to capture 30-35% of this expanding segment.

According to a Hubco financial filing, BYD Pakistan reported a profit of approximately Rs444 million ($1.56 million) in the first quarter of 2025.

The company will soon introduce its Shark 6 plug-in hybrid pickup truck, competing with MG’s existing PHEV SUV and Haval’s upcoming entries. Plug-in hybrids are gaining traction in Pakistan due to limited EV charging infrastructure. To boost adoption, the government reduced electricity tariffs for charging stations by 45% earlier this year, encouraging private investment in charging networks.

BYD’s expansion aligns with Pakistan’s push toward sustainable mobility, offering consumers more eco-friendly transportation options.
